Roadbook riding/practice weekend
I know we are all sick and tired of hearing about COVID-19. We are all frustrated and we are all uncertain about what the future holds.
This makes planning ahead extremely hard and difficult, but I believe we have to have something to look forward to, something to get excited about...... to help us get through these uncertain and tough times.
Hopefully this is it, if you have been dreaming about riding your bike the way I have been dreaming the last few weeks.
I decided to convert some of my gpx tracks around Murraysburg into road books during the lockdown.
The idea is to have a roadbook riding/practice weekend where we can get to use our rally bikes, learn from each other, enjoy nature and just have a lekker time while keeping the cost as low as possible.
I plan to have at least 5 roadbooks that we can ride as individuals or groups, depending on the feeling/vibe and the needs of each individual.
Murraysburg is relatively centrally located for all and we can have a 50-60 km stage with tricky navigation right out of town. You can do this as and when you arrive on Friday afternoon, or on Friday morning should you choose to come through on Thursday.
Then on Saturday we do 2 stages (approx 150-180 km in total) of Karoo mountains, river beds and plains.
And Sunday those who want to can start early and do a tough/technical mountain stage of about 80km, followed by a long 350km stage on fast, wide open Karoo farm roads, covering 3 provinces in one day. If you don't want to get up early on Sunday, you skip the early morning stage and just do the long stage.
This won't be a formal event; it's more aimed at getting together and riding road books, training (for those who have rallies planned), sharing rally stories around the fire, kuiering under the stars and exploring very special parts if the Karoo you won't normally get to see (almost all the routes are on private land). It's an informal gathering of like minded individuals who happen to own rally bikes and want to go for a ride…... in order to keep costs down.
On that point, we are looking at R3000 per person. That would be for the roadbooks, accommodation and access to all the private land we will be riding on.
Accommodation will be camping. I will provide tents and mattresses, but if you don't want to sleep in a tent, we will be camping at the show-grounds in town so you can sleep in the farmers hall. There are toilets and hot showers.
In order to limit logistics each person is responsible for their own food, but I can also arrange meals if you want or get braai packs from farmers as long as you let me know ahead of time. There will be braai facilities, wood and a cash bar.
Now the all important question.....? When? At this point I am looking at 22-24 May. That is if the lock down gets lifted. I know there is a lot of uncertainty, but we have to look to the future and plan ahead. If the lock down is extended, we will just have to look at another date.
Ok, that's pretty much it. If you are keen on joining please let me know by sending me an email (firstname.lastname@example.org) or a whats app (0648304750) or by filling in the entry form below.
See info summary/slide show below. Please share with your mates or anybody else that would be interested directly, I am not going to put it all over social media.
You can also join our whats app group if you are planning to come - below
As soon as the lockdown is lifted I will be going to pre-run all the routes.....
Thanks guys, hope to see you in Murraysburg for a great weekend of riding, camaraderie, roadbooks, stories and so much more!
